A day in the life of a consultant - questions to Tobias Reuter

1. Who are you? What do you do at ON-POINT? How long have you been there?
I joined ON-POINT as Consultant in late 2019, after 7 years working for a German bank in Germany and abroad. I bring a strong Finance background and specialize in Regulatory Reporting topics since more than five years. Since I joined ON-POINT, I was able to gain additional skills, especially around the Avaloq core banking system. I am glad that I was appointed as managing director of the new ON-POINT branch in Düsseldorf, Germany.

2. Your first day at work - what do you remember?
The first day at ON-POINT was a sunny day in Zurich, which is quite rare in autumn. In the morning, I met the responsible partner Frank in the office and got a brief overview about the organizational essentials. Afterwards, I was introduced in the state and challenges of my first project, which I was obviously most excited in. Already in the afternoon I could start with the first analyses for the project. Getting this confidence, especially in the beginning, was a great experience.

3. What does a typical day as a consultant look like?
This is a typical question we get asked during job interviews by the candidates. As Consultant there is not a special routine, which I would consider part of a typical day. The tasks vary depending on the state of the specific project we are working for. Of course, there are regular tasks, meetings and calls, but often, in the morning, I do not yet know exactly, which topics will arise during a day. So there is definitively no boredom coming up in the job. Since Covid, I work mainly from home, as working onside is not possible or wished with most of the clients. I start by checking mails with the first coffee. After that you have an indication, what the day will look like.

4. How do you succeed at ON-POINT?
ON-POINT is a small Consulting boutique with highly talented people, and it is a great experience working with them in different fields. For a good reason Stewardship is one of the core values of our company and willing of taking more responsibilities is often rewarded. In my case we were able to show the board that there are several good reasons and a stable business case for investing in a German branch. So I get the great opportunity to now work even more actively in the development of ON-POINT by managing the German branch.

5. What is your most important tool?
It is the own knowledge, which consists out of the own skills, the own capabilities, and the learned expertise. The more knowledge you gained, the easier it is to understand the client’s needs and the faster you can help him.
